EQ in the right order

The order matters more than the exact numbers.
  1. High-pass first. Roll off below roughly 80-100 Hz to remove rumble and proximity buildup. Move the cutoff up until you hear the vocal thin out, then back off a touch.
  2. Clear the mud. Sweep a narrow cut through 200-500 Hz, find the boxiest spot, and cut 2-4 dB with a moderate Q. This is the single biggest fix for a vocal that sounds cloudy.
  3. Tame nasal or boxy honk. If the voice sounds nasal, a small narrow cut somewhere around 500 Hz to 1 kHz cleans it up. Only if you hear it.

EQ on the vocal alone is only half the job. The other half is making room for it:

  • Mind the low mids. Kick, bass, and vocal body all pile up in 100-400 Hz. High-passing the vocal and trimming its mud keeps that region clean.
